15 books game or ego-masterbation

Friday, July 31, 2009 at 12:12pm.

Obligatory instructions note: Don’t take too long to think about it. Fifteen books you’ve read that will always stick with you. First fifteen you can recall in no more than 15 minutes. Copy the instructions into your own note, and be sure to tag the person who tagged you. *i couldn't resist*

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER...

1. The Way We Talk Now
Geoffrey Nunberg

2. Lolita
Vlad Nabokov
(actually i keep The Collected Short Stories of Nabokov next to my bed, it's like my bible)

3. Human Wishes
Robert Hass

4. I Know This Much is True
Wally Lamb
(and The Hour I First Believed- it's like a tie... actually i'll read anything he writes)

5. Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers
Mary Roach

6. The Metamorphosis
Franz Kafka

7. The Crimson Petal and the White
Michael Faber

8. Year of Wonders
Geraldine Brooks

9. John Adams
David McCullough

10. Memoirs of a Geisha
Arthur Golden

11. anything by John Irving
(if i had to narrow it down i'd say- A Prayer for Owen Meany, Until I Find You, or A Widow for One Year)

12. Beloved
Toni Morrison

13. Ulysses
James Joyce
(i'm sorry, i tried to keep this off to seem less pretentious, but i sometimes feel like i didn't know how to really write til i read this)

14. Collected Poems
C. K. Williams ( i know, it's cheating to pick his "best of" but how can i pick just one?)

15. Where I'm Calling From: Selected Stories by Raymond Carver
(i need raymond carver like i need air)

i feel like i'm leaving so many off...

i have to say Peter Pan by JM Barrie too even though it is somewhat embarrassing, i feel like like i owe it to him since he's tattooed on my flesh. no, literally.

wait, i also have to suck it up and say Summer Sisters by Judy Blume (which got me through much of my teen angst)

Oooh! and Kurt Vonnegut, duh
