I'm having some trouble getting into the holiday spirit this year. we lost someone close to us and sort of slept from halloween onwards and then last week i got super sick and now here we are, 2 weeks away and no gifts, no tree, no holiday cheer. in order to work myself up for it i'm compiling a list of the most amazing christmas songs i know. i'm going to burn a myself the most amazing christmas cd in the world and use my friends and family as inspiration, so your help in this matter would be appreciated.
so here they are, in no particular order, everyone's favorite christmas songs:
Happy Xmas (war is over) - orion used to say his favorite carol was The little Drummer Boy for obvious reasons, but that is my absolute least favorite so it didn't get much play in our house. i'm not sure he knew Happy Xmas (war is over) is a john lennon song but now that he does we have to stop what we're doing and appreciate it every time it comes on the radio. it's interesting to note that, in general, orion never listened to christmas music in his pre-Grace life. in fact, he sort of hated it.
Do They Know Its Christmas? - this is my friend lance's favorite christmas song ever. no, actually it's not. he hates it actually. but it's still making the list because every time it comes on i think of his overwhelming rage for it: "do they know it's christmas? FUCK NO. not everyone fucking has to love jesus and people that don't give a shit about the christ child don't deserve our pity. they're entitled to their own goddamn religious beliefs." ahhhh lance. i can't help but get the snickers everytime i hear this.
All I Want for Christmas- mariah carey version - my friend sara stromer and i used to work at this toy store, and before they knew what a terribe work ethic we had when working together the bosses used to have us do inventory together in the basement during christmas time. we'd listen to Delilah on liteFM and say sappy sarcastic things about the songs she played. one time we heard this song and sara got all into it with sways and snaps and all that jazz. you sort of have to know sara for this to be really funny but all of the sudden she stopped and deadpanned: "that mariaih carey, MMmm! she got a voice like honey!" it was pure comedy gold.
A Frank Sinatra Christmas Album- i think this was the only christmas cd my family ever bought and played regularly. we don't mess around about Frank Sinatra, he's sacred.
Please Come Home For Christmas -Aaaron Neville version- the first christmas after i moved out from my parents house i lived with my best friend Arliss. it was such a weird tubulent time for both of us. we were 18 and both dating these loser guys and walking to le saber for cheeseburgers at 2AM. we were both not really on the best terms with our parents and kind of apprehensive about the upcoming holidays. arliss was waitressing at The Hilltop and on tuesdays i would drag myself out of bed before 11 so that i could go have breakfast there and boss her around. even though i always ordered the same thing i'd be all assinine like, "what's good here?" and "is your ham fresh" and all that. I'm not sure if this is still her favorite christmas song, but it was then. and every time i hear it, i think about that weird time when i was 18 and just starting my life and living with my best friend.
All I Want for Christmas is my 2 front teeth- not the chipmunks version, one even more obnoxious that i can't even remember - i used to have this cd of old timey christmas songs that i recorded from a kid's christmas record and every single time this song came on it enraged everyone in the vicinity. i remember one time when i was working at the toystore my friend margaret actually jumped over the counter and lunged at the cd player to skip this track. it did not go over well at all. and nestled in the cd at #8 it always seemed to sneak up on everyone. eventually this cd went missing...
Last Christmas - george michael - really this song should be number one because it's amazing on so many levels. it's one of those songs i started out making fun of and now i can't tell if i like it because i like making fun of it or if it really like it. arliss and sara are HUGE george michael fans. HUGE. come to think of it, arliss may have signed me up to sing this at karaoke over the summer. also it's interesting to note that i taught my younger siblings (danny and ree) to sing this song in its entirety before they had any idea how humiliating it was for them. i think there was even a dance routine involved. my sister rachael still holds this over my head, but mainly because the song i taught her to sing and dance to was the chipmunks "christmas don't be late" and it took forever for her to get the hula hoop part right...
O Holy Night- nat king cole, i believe - this was my brother dave's favorite song. he'd get this pained look of reverence and really belt out the "fall on your knees" part. smug overzealous religious child that he was it always drove me crazy.
of course i'd have to put some rock and roll stuff on there too. maybe Hadda Brooks doing White Christmas? and Charles Brown's Merry Christmas Baby (possibly one of my favs, by the way) gotta do Chuck Berry's run run rudolph... Oh! and the kinks Father Christmas
