a tragic romance

Current mood: exanimate

so my french friend is absolutely dying because he's in love with this girl who works at The Grind. after hearing the details of the flirtation, i advised that he be bold. after all, aren't the french known for their passion? he has two obstacles we couldn't seem to work around:

1. he barely speaks any english. he's only been here two months and he's leaving in another month
2. he does not own a phone, so has no real way to contact her

today he informed me that he regularly spends hours and hours in The Grind drinking ungodly amounts of coffee just to be near her. so freaking adorable, really. i almost puked. he even left his scarf there once so that he could go back there and ask her if they found it. it's that bad.

so he asks me to come get coffee with him there because maybe i'll be able to tell if she likes him. myself, i'm about as subtle as a brick wall, which makes me a bit unatuned to picking up on the subtleties of others, but i went anyway. the girl is freaking adorable, really. one of those cutie little pixie types. i had no idea whether she liked him because their exchanges are limited to:

her: "house blend or ethiopian?"
him: "house"
her: "cream and sugar?"
him: "milk, please"

obviously they are both very shy. and since he's leaving in a month that pretty much limits their ability to properly date, which probably wouldn't happen anyway since as far as i can tell they are unable to make eye contact. they're both so good looking, though. it's really a shame. i always feel bad when beautiful people can't find love... it's like a cruel irony or some kind of fate tease...

he doesn't seem to believe me that even if she doesn't like him back, she won't be offended if he asks her out. he thinks it would upset her dignity or something. french women must be real bitches because he says that's how it is with them. it would offend them to be asked out by a man whom they did not deem worthy of their affections.

so apparently the love is not to be. poor frenchie. been here two months and has yet to kiss an american woman...

and the girl? what of her? probably she's just as mad about him...he's so cute... how could she not be? they'd be so perfect, but alas...

in closing i quote that song that i occationally hear Delilah play on 93.9 lite FM. i don't even know the name of it, and maybe that's a metaphor... "sometimes love...it just ain't enough"
